During the bubonic plague of the 1500's a band of gypsies stole from the sick, dying and dead. The gypsies would pilfer jewelry, coins, whatever they could find on the dead bodies lining the street. When the king heard of the gypsies and how they did not catch the plaque he had them arrested, When offered the choice of public hanging or give up their secret the gypsies explained they were spice traders.
